Question Is 2020 the beginning of the end of the world?

I guess WW1 and WW2 were nothing. The Spanish flu was nothing. Genghis Khan was a nobody. The Black Plague was nothing. Put things in perspective for a bit.

Reread the post, it is all about perspective. 2020 will be rough for many people, but we have survived worse in my own lifetime, a personal observation. You certainly can add to the point by citing pandemics and wars from before my time.

I did read your post and your hyperbole about the beginning of the end was just too silly. Every generation has had issues to deal with. The only difference is instant news and instant panic. This time is no different then any other. That was my point.

You think that this is a crisis? +97% of the people that have been exposed to the coronavirus to date have survived.That is +97%. I will take those odds any day. Of the people that have died +98% have had a pre-existing condition or are very old. So if you are healthy and no pre-existing conditions then you have a +99% chance of surviving a case coronovirus. Most people who have gotten infected have had the sniffles or a cough. If you are very old then just getting a cold can kill you never mind the flu or coronavirus. Just wash your hands regularly like you always should. I personally have not changed any aspect of my day to day life nor do I plan to.
A stock market correction is long over due. War is a constant on this planet. We are due for a recession. Global warming is just another man made problem that we have to deal with. Just like the ozone issue, the DDT issue, the ccd in the bee population etc. etc. etc.

I would not ask my doctor for his opinion on the UNIX, or a real estate agent for his opinion of a suspicious looking mole. Back in the early 80's (I am dating myself), when the USSR and nuclear winter were real threats, for my own amusement I started asking people if they thought they would see the end of the world in their lifetimes. I was surprised by how many did. For all it's problems the world has improved quite a bit since that time, and this has reinforced my natural optimism. But this year is a year of crisis - the Carona virus is a serious threat, a long over-due recession/depression may be coming soon, identity politics is dividing people into warring camps, there is rising totalitarianism, serious economic inequality over most of the planet, climate change, rising ocean levels ... I personally think we are in for a tough time but we will get through it, and perhaps even prosper in a few years. How about you guys? Is 2020 just a year of crisis or is it the beginning of the end?

If you want something safe for the long term, a company with a massive dividend like XOM is worth looking at.

You usually have to pay tax to the U.S. govt and the CAD govt when you buy a stock like XOM, but nothing is perfect.
