Getting beat up

Anyone who spends anytime reading about Thailand online eventually (if not regularly) reads stories about foreigners getting jumped by a group of Thai guys, and often beaten to within inches of their life, if not to death. Most recently, I read of the golf club attack in Phuket of an Italian by the bouncer at a bar.

But what I find lacking in most of the things I read is the back story as to what exactly happened to cause this chain of events. I'd imagine that sometimes/often it's because they've tried to scam someone somehow, or they've pissed off the wrong bargirl in some way. But, this is pure speculation, as I don't really know what causes these fights.

So for those in the know - for what sorts of reasons do these guys get the shit kicked out of them? Is it generally their fault? Or is this another one of the things you have to watch for in Thailand - 'be careful you don't get your head beat in by a golf club for no particular reason'.

I'm curious on a tabloid-level, but the other side of it is that I would like to make sure I don't inadvertently get beat down some night when I'm thinking I'm minding my own business.

Reasoned post IMHO. I tend to get the impression that those that arrive here with the 'Chip from Hell' on their shoulders about all things Thai and that they are doing Thailand a big favour by being here are usually not happy unless they go home after each trip having not been in an argument, bust up or a fight.

If you go anywhere on holiday with that attitude and 'seeking it out' either intentionally or not.....Then you'll find it, or it'll find you.

Stay at home and get whatever it is out of your system and have your fight there.

that is my one critisism of Canadians, is i feel they lack passion
i'd rather get too high or too low than just not have the passion at all

we talk about face on here a lot regarding the thais
try getting a Canadian in the workforce to actually say how they feel. it is not easy!

I've only had problems twice in Patong, both with foreigners.

1) A Japanese man who couldn't speak English and was real drunk and scaring some bar girls in the Soi Tiger being aggressive and stuff and refusing to pay a bill, much to the attention of the bar staff. Having lived in Japan for a few years, I tried to defuse the situation by talking to him in Japanese to which he replied in Japanese along the lines of "who do you think you are, speaking my language, you piece of shit". I told him to calm down and I was just checking if he was OK and needing help. Again, he abused me, so I told him to **** off and sort his own problem out. He didn't like that and came out me, pushed me into the table/bar. I grabbed him and pulled him right in, told him to pay his bill and get out, when security came rushing in and were all over the guy. The bargirls had my back and I got a couple of free drinks out of it.... and a nice barfine later

The other was with an American who was disrespecting the bargirls at a local favourite of mine. I've known all the girls for a couple of years and always look after them with LD's, BBQ's and the occasional barfine. He kept referring to them as sl*ts, wh*res and treating them like pieces of meat, pinching them on the *** and trying to pull up their skirts and pull down their tops etc. I'm not down with that and told him to get into line. They are my friends, they were scared and uncomfortable and he didn't stop, so I had some stern words with him then a pissy not even one minute fight broke out, mostly pushing and a couple of cheap shots before all the bargirls jumped in and broke it up. He left in a huff and i stayed. The girls were happy and I was their hero for the night. He came back the next night, oddly enough and actually apologized, bought me a couple of drinks and had a chat. He explained it that he'd just "lost his head" since coming to Thailand and was glad that he'd met me who made him realize his behavior.

Apart from that, I've never had an issue, nor really seen too many problems apart from the jetski guys shaking down unsuspecting farangs for cash.

I try to treat all Thais I meet with respect and share everything I have.

I don't think its random ...there is usually some form of altercation. The issue is usually that the outcome by the thai's is grossly disproportionate to the problem in the first case.

Frog legs, because it is really hard to fight with them big ol flippers on and garlic, cos you can't sneek up a rabbit punch people from behind.

Very little excuse is needed. However, same same with the girls, once provoked farang gets it.

Just reverse the roles, how would you feel if a bunch of arrogant drunk foreigners came to your town with more money than you and slept with your sisters, wives, girlfriends? Simple to work out the problem.

Well I gotta say the many times I have been to the LOS never had a problem with any thai people.In fact I get along better with thai's when I'm over there and have made some good friendships.One of my thai friends has told me many times how tourists have treated him, he owns tourist info/ internet shop he gets abuse from tourists complaining internet fee is too much, trying to get a cheaper price on day tours etc etc... He had one tourist spit on him... He say's some tourist bad cause they show no respect to locals, think they can be abuse cause they have money, they think they own us. The way I have seen some ferrang treat locals is disgusting and deserve to cop a beating....

for the OP, on a 'tabloid level' (i like that) I'll generally assume they did something to instigate an altercation - news reports whether from local sources or bar stools are usually so wound up in prejudices and expat whispers even the bare facts of injuries and numbers can't be trusted let alone any other detail, and i don't buy the most injured (and white)= most innocent line

unless of course tuk tuk drivers were involved and then it will always be a shameful attack on a poor innocent tourist who did nothing wrong

genuine attacks rather than mere fights are few and far between

there's never really a reason (acually worth finding) for fights in drink and drug sodden brothel towns but discussing such incidents tells us more about ourselves

Canada was hosting the games. It's not exactly being a good host inviting someone into your house then saying 'now I'm going to dominate you'. Thirty years ago in Canada, it would have never happened. Now the times are a changing

I don't think it would be the french influence so much, as there isn't a lot of cross-cultural pollination between English and French speaking canadians. We mix, but the cultures themselves are still pretty distinct. Although to be fair, I'm from western Canada, and the French are mostly in the east, so maybe there is more mixture on the east side.

well, i am not in the camp that it is all the rotten tourists fault

but......i do think if you want to avoid a fight or a confrontation you can 100% of the times in Thailand

never had any trouble in my visits to thailand in the last 14 years,seen a few arseholes get a slight smacking. but they instigated the trouble(did not want to pay the 4000 baht tab they just rung up is common)

no worries with tuk tuk guys either,if they want 300 baht to drive a pissed me a mile ,fair play at 3am in the morning
never been on a jet ski
