phuket v samui

i recently came back from my latest tour which incorporated bangkok,pattaya,loei and samui.no phuket,which is a first for me i believe in 17 visits.

anyway i was just wondering how busy it is in patong lately.i ask as when i was in chaweng,i met a hell of a lot of guys who had come over from phuket saying it was very very quiet.also a lot who just said they had enough of patong and its silly prices.

i must say i thoroughly enjoyed samui and am going back in early july.i found it cheaper than patong and i am not sure if it was because it was my first time there or not,but i had the best time i can remember having in los for a very long time.not loads of women but plenty to go around.i mainly stayed round the soi green mango area.
also i had a day and half at kog phangan,very good indeed.went to some mad party there in the middle of nowhere.

anyway getting off topic.
so is phuket busy or not?

Having friends over at the moment i'm certainly hitting Patong much more than usual. Yes i would say its quiet and getting more quiet. I've also noticed the price hikes and Patong is totally out-pricing itself beyond belief. In fact its starting to become a desperate place with desperate people (local thais) but what they dont realise is that they are damaging their own livelihood.

One of my mates is coming back in September and took advaneforum.xxxe of SQ's promotional rates a while back. Having had some great nights in Kamala he's decided to stay their next trip and forget Patong and all the BS that goes with it. I wonder how many others are making this transition because of all the greed and corruption that Patong is generating ???

Was out last night had a few beers with the other Simon - Gollum in Baan Rim Klong, only lived here for over 3 years hardly ever go there except for occasional sunday roast. Si suggested I have a ruby, good selection, went for the house chicken curry and it was fandabbydocious!! so just a tip for locals, fancy a decent curry at low prices, think mine was 160bht with a naan bread, stinkerparps guaranteed!! could be a good option for when you are next over Sef.

Anyway back on topic, havn't been to samuii for awhile but liked it a lot, my only complaint was that the road with all the action in Chaweng was so long, but there again at least they have songtaew's which makes things so much easier and cheaper to move about.

Like the sound of the curry though and better still, good location to KBG. Must admit Sef's got me hooked on the Offshore ones at the moment on a Friday night, bloody lurvely !!

One of my major reasons for planning kamala as my future address is all of that silliness that goes on in Tong....gouging, pimping, padding bills, begging for drinks + money and hiking prices etc just because they are looking at a falang....plus i just don't wanna face a red light district every time I walk out the door

I haven't been to Samui for a couple of years now but it certainly wasn't cheap compared to Phuket the last time I went...in fact I'd say its more like high season Patong all year round as it gets very little low season these days

i stayed right opposite green mango at chaweng garden resort,v.v nice hotel for 1250 baht a nite which is reasonable compared to phuket.was paying 70 baht a heineken in most bars i went in,80 in others which is on par or 10 or so baht cheaper than patong.never paid more than 1000 baht for lt and dearest bf was 400,mostly 300.
as i said i dont no if it was because of it being my first time there,but i had as good a time as i can remember in los.reminded me of my first trip.
i will be back in patong in september/october,but looking forward to getting back to samui ijn july.

that all sounds pretty reasonable Steve....and probably a bit less than what I was paying a couple of years back....especially accommodation and the gals....

I had a 4 star hotel (cabin on the beach at the south of the island near the butterfly farm) for 2kish and most of my gals were found in the nightclubs around Lamai which were better than the equivalent clubs in Patong IMO... vodka soda was about 120bht and most of then gals were asking 2k which I found acceptable enough...there were a few crackers amongst them too!

i didnt care for that main area of Chawaeng at all
that bar area was good but the street and such was way too congested

now Lamai, i simply loved because it has such a beach town feel to it

I was visiting Patong late 80's/early 90's when the bar' were full and really rocking and it wasn't so commercialised. I used to spend 4-5 weeks in Patong each visit. Now I'm lucky to spend 4-5 days in Patong. Way overdone now.

I'm heading to Patong in June and will report back then as to how busy it is. Reading through forum would suggest it's a little quiet at the moment.

How do you feel you fitted in on Samui and especially around Green Mango? (I know 36 isn’t old!)

When I went it was such a young crowd it just started to get on my tits a bit. I felt it was so focused on the whole rave/beach party/druggy scene. Is that the feeling you got?

Lamai bored me to tears last December. Ghost-town, and full of worn-out old buzzards passing as BGs. Left early. Relatively expensive to get to. Would NOT consider going back unless it was with a girlfriend.

After 2 very successful trips to BKK and Pattaya in the last 12 months I have decided to extend meself and head to Phuket in July.I am wondering how are things in Phuket at the mo with prices,the BG's attitudes etc. I have read and heard many different reports on Patong recently which seems to suggest that things are getting expensive and that the place is maybe losing its appeal due to the hassling and hustling of the locals.Any opinions on this guys ?..

Its a couple of years since I visited Samui & I cant wait to get back there in October with 2 of my mates who have never been

I've been meaning to go back every trip i've been since but it always just seems too hard to get up off my **** when in either Patts or Patong to sort it out....great little spot tho'. More relaxed & more beautiful in my opinion than the other 2 spots

Not sure about prices....I think I remember payin 1200 for a room inthe Samui Coral right smack on the beach & never paid more than 1000 LT.

Only ladies I had tho' were freelancers from Green Mango....biggest regret ever from Los was not takin this particular go go dancer from Dreamgirls...prob hottest thing ive ever met but I wouldnt pay the price she wanted as I was a cheap ass backpacker at the time :grrrrrr: :bangin:

Been to Samui twice and going again in 2 weeks time. Its a very different vibe from Patong and Pattaya and a much better place to relax/chill out for a while. Only staying for a week, but it will be a great break.

Lots of resort style accommodation there. I stay at a little villa complex in Lamai, which is really nice, albeit expensive. But a perfect place to unwind. Lamai and Chaweng are very different, but good to be able to hit on different nights to mix things up a bit.

Agree that there are a few BGs there with too many miles on the clock, but there are also some stunners. Got to look about a bit, but thats all part of the fun.

I also find the entertainment cheaper than Patong and Patts. One of the great things about LOS is that you can go to different places and have totally different experiences. All depends what you are in the mood for. This time i'm in the mood to relax and Samui will hit the spot nicely!

just like to say that hotel was meant to be 1500 but negotiated.

to be honest i found it very good.i dont feel 36 and dont act it,but i didnt think i was surrounded by youngsters.
found there to be a hell of a lot of couples,not many single guys.there where youngsters,but also a lot of 30-40 year olds,who i might add where dissillusioned with patong.
also there was some outstanding western girls,absolute stunners.all seemed to be aussies mind.
koh phangan was a bit of a younger crowd,definately a lot of pot heads but not so off putting for me at least.
