why do my girlfriends parents introduce me as her 'friend'?

i have been dating my girlfriend for 4 years now. her mother always introduces me to family members i haven't met yet as my girlfriends "friend". But her younger sisters boyfriend gets introduced as her boyfriend. It really upsets me sometimes. Should i say something or just let it go? Has anyone else had this same problem before??

I have been called for past for 5 yers, yea i have been in a realationship with the same chick for 8years and her family introduced as her friend, only her brothers call me her girlfriend.i think when parents act this way, its because they still don't want to believe the fact that their little baby like girls, you should let it go, because talking about this issue will bring a huge and sudden realization to the parents specially when they have been denying it for so long. after 5 years of passing for the friend , one day of the clear blue sky , the mom introduce to a girl and said my daughter's partner and then the father followed. unfortunately, they have the ball in the game and all we can do is let them find the goal themselves.

i see how that could be really frustrating. parents, and older people in general, usually have a hard time getting over the fact that their kid is gay, so i think they just rather avoid trying to make someone else understand something that they dont completely understand themselves.

i would just let it go. just for them to accept you and try to understand your relationship with their daughter must be hard enough for them. maybe they will get more comfortable with it one day. and 4 years might seem like a lot, but just think how long it took you to become comfortable with your sexuality, or to be open about it in public. just a thought.

Do the parents know that you both are dating? If, not...then let them know that your girlfriends not just friends.

Seems to me her parents aren't comfortable with your relationship and might be actually embarrassed of it because they say you are just "friends" when it is painfully obvious you are and have been more than that for years. You need to say something, just interrupt her the next time she does it and say "I'm her girlfriend" and shake the person's hand. If she has a problem with it too bad, she needs to get over it.

Your girlfriend's mother introduces you as a friend because she wants to avoid the "sexual identity" awkwardness. If you and your girlfriend choose to out yourselves, this is your business. Your gf's mother doesn't want to deal with it.

Sure, you can say something if you like. If you want to damage the relationship your gf has with her mother and/or you want to damage the relationship you have with your gf's family, go ahead and make unnecessary waves.

There are thousands upon thousands of people in same-sex relationships who would LOVE to have your problem - because it would mean that their mother is a part of their lives and is supportive enough of their relationship to introduce them to family members.

If you want to make waves, you can. But be prepared for the storm the waves will develop into.
