Your hang up appears to be the "20 or 50 times" quote which I used as a figure of speach, similar to your harping on the drug scene.
You wont find me down the local rave popping pills etc either cos I have been there and done that in my youth.
As for the modern forms of communication etc I use them much the same as my kids do, or you do if it comes to it, as an engineer I use the modern technology every single day, and in some respects, strange though it may seem, I actually know more about some aspects of this technology than my kids do.
What I was trying to point out is that someone of 30 does not have the overall experience of a 60 year old no matter what you think, especially one who has children, and, like many older guys on this board, manage to keep up with the day to day problems of youth and also the other problems that age brings, like keeping the family finances together in the good and bad times and making sure we understand the problems of our children - not always easy I can assure you.
I was also pointing out to my kids that, although they all think they know everything, as I did at their age, in actual fact they dont come near it.
As an example, I find my kids seem to know very little of geography and history as the level of teaching now in some countries is, IMHO, well below par - we have a young 19 y/o girl in the office who, yesterday said "what does this 'superseded' mean" - when one of the guys told her to look it up she replied "cant be bothered, either tell me or dont".
This is not a rant about how much more I know about life than younger BM's but more pointing out the fact that the young generation doesn't know as much as they think they do. The reference to 'living to my age' had very little to do with the drug scene but more to do with the hectic, crouded life style we tend to live in now-a-days - yes my old Healey 3000 struggled to get to 120 mph which yours mums modern car could probably do with no problems but at 120 mph the Healey was like riding on a very old roller coaster ...5555, the modern cars are far more safe and far easier to drive I can tell you.
Again dont think this is in any way knocking the young cos remember - I was also young once myself.

Got your dates a little bit wrong here Lil, a 50 year old guy was born late 50's early 60's, this means he was in his mid twenties was mid 80's, and you are telling me that he did not have any experience of drugs??? or is the main cut of your argument that we do not have the experience of today's drugs??

If this is your argument against what Les posted, then it is you that is being naive and laughable. His point I beleive is that with age comes experience of many many things that you have no idea about when you are in your 20's, but when you are in your 20's you think you know everything about everything and older people than you are all senile!!!

Drugs are just one minute part of that experience and it shouldn't be sidetracked into, as you didn't have this or that drug in your youth you obviously do not know anything about today's life. Ever considered for one moment, most older guys actually have younger children, maybe even in their 20's, oops perhaps they do know a little about life now versus life over the last 50 years, just a thought anyways.

Well "being told what goes on" and having experience of it are two wildly different things..

But I certainly dont for a second presume to think I know everything, or even a substantial amount.. Thats my point, I am not the one claiming such knowledge but when some old guy with (as you say) no direct experience of some things claims "that there was nothing they had done in their short lifetimes that I hadn't done 20 times more and 50 times better." well which one is making presumptions ?? This is exactly the attitude of some older guys which is frankly laughable..

Theres a different world out there to the one they grew up in, its changing from the one I grew up in, and it will be different by the time a new generation grows up.. I DONT presume I will know it all and have done it all 20 times more or 50 times better. Thats the exact attitude I am knocking not emulating.

The 70 and 80s were before all this designer drug culture became mainstream, but drug are just an easy example to use (because of their risks and recent arrival), theres different more subtle social changes (communications and interaction changes, social trends and fashions) that are not simply repeats of a previous world and to claim youve done it all 20 times more and 50 times better, is arrogance.


Seems to me both youth and age have their own brands of arrogance.


Drugs are just one example as it was the easiest to make.. But society changes, people relate in different way, communications tools make teen youth these days follow how each other interact, thier social fads and interest, via facebook equipped phones and social networks.. What first hand knowledge does someone over 50 (maybe even over 30) know about digital ostracism, or social network bullying, when sending an SMS or email on their phone is about as complex as they get ??

Societies change.. and presuming you know it all (20 times more and 50 times better) is arrogant to the point of foolishness.
