Aromatherapy lip balm

Am having ago at making lip balms, and am impressed with myself so far.
I have made lavender and peppermint which was nice but now thinking of making Cinamon and orange( christmas one ).
does any one have any nice oil blends they have used for this??

I'm doing this too. I bought a honey flavouring though. I haven't tried aromatherapy oils in the mix as yet, but do intend to.

What about rose? that would smell yum.

Melanie, It's not too difficult, its about melting the ingredients slowly. I will dig out the recipe I've used and also the website I bought the ingredients from as they were fantastic.

Ingredients:
100gm Beeswax
125gm Shea Butter
75gm Cocoa Butter
15ml Coconut Oil (liquid)
5ml Vitamin E Oil
20 x 15ml Glass Jars
10 drops of Vanilla Fragrance Oil
10 drops of Orange Essential Oil
(for more therapeutic essential oils try Spearmint, Lime and Tea Tree)
Method:
Using a bain marie melt all the ingredients (except the essential oils / fragrances). When melted add the remaining essential oils and fragrance oils and mix and pour into the pots. Seal the lids whilst still hot. Your aromatherapy Lip Balm will stay fresh for up to six months unopened and approx 3 months once opened. Unhygienic or warm conditions could shorten these times.


You can swap and change the flavours, have fun

Vaseline is one of the worst things you can put on your lips. Ever noticed when you use it you get into the habit of constantly re-applying it?

Even though it feels nice when you first apply it, it forms a seal and draws moisture out from the lips instead of adding to it. It smoothers the skin and stops it from breathing and clogs pores. That is why after using it only a few times the lips become dry, cracked and sore.

Also, petroleum is a crude oil that contains heavy metals that our body can't digest and effect the liver and kidneys.

Vaseline and baby oil are the two biggest beauty scams on the market.

So throw out all your lipsticks, glosses and balms and treat yourself to some cocoa or shea butter instead.

JoJo loved your recipe so much that I went onto the base formula website intending to order base ingredients but they only have largish quantities. I stopped when my shopping cart got up to £48
Then I checked out your other recommendations. Yaay a kit at a most reasonable price. Result

I totally agree with Urban_Hippy on the vaseline/petroleum jelly. I've stopped using all products with this in and make my own products now.

I make lip balms in 3 flavours at the moment - Spearmint, Lemon & Lime, and Tea Tree & Lavender (this one can also be used for bites and burns and cuts etc.)

Aromantic do Lip Balm Making kits which have all the ingredients required plus some tubes to fill - works out cheaper. It makes about 60 lip balms!

Thanks for the info on vaseline UH. You are right, I do have to keep reapplying it. More reason to make my own lip balms.

A very very simple recipe is to use about 30ml of oil such as calendula or jojoba and about 5g of beeswax. THis will make a softish balm suitable for a small pot/jar. If you are using sticks you will need more beeswax.
Melt them together in a pyrex jug in a saucepan of simmering water. When the beeswax has melted add essential oils of your choice according to the properties/aroma you want.
You can play with the recipe and add ie 5g cocoa butter/ shea butter/ unfractionated coconut etc and use a bit less oil. You don't need to buy kits that cost a lot of money as most suppliers sell beeswax and the other ingredients in small quantities anyway.

one quick question, for a 10 ml pot of lip balm, would you use one or two drops of essential oil.
