bargain chair for casual home use

Hello,
My name is paul and I am going to learn some very basic chair massage as a christmass present to my wife.

I ordered "Mastering Chair Massage" Diana Haynes; DVD which should be here this week.

I want to get a massage chair instead of just trying to set up in a dining room chair or the like.

I am considering chairs on ebay like the endure and step2 as well as other low end chairs.

My wife is 5'8" and I am 5'10"

Based on your expert opinion, would these low end chairs provide the proper fit and enjoyment for casual home use.

I know you are only going to use the chair for "home" use, but I would consider buying a better quality chair for the comfort if nothing else.

The Stronglite chair (see http://www.stronglite.com/home/sl1/smartlist_3/portable_massage_chairs.html)
is comfortable and very adjustable. I am sure that once you get the hang of massage, you will want to do other people - and I have had children as young as 5 or 6 and as old as their 90's and people as tall as 6' 9" in the chair. It can also take people up to 600lbs. The vinyl feels like leather. And the price is not bad now - I see it is $349.00US and if you are in the contiguous US, shipping is free. (Maybe I should ask for commission!)

If you don't want to spend money on a chair yet, Eric Brown of Relax to the Max has a massage ebook which shows about 20 massages which can be done in a standard chair. There are illustrations and clear instructions.

well, may i suggest you take the middle route?

here are some links (hopefully they will all work) that will show some table top massage chairs. these are less expensive than a traditional chair but can provide the same support. the prices range from around $100 to $200.

one of the schools i went to used some of these while teaching chair techniques and sending students out to practice massage with them. i have not ordered from any of these websites. i think my first table was an earthgear (i bought it at a sporting goods store). i didn't have to spend a lot of money on it, it was sturdy and can still be used, but it is a little on the hard side. my new table is earthlite, it cost a little bit more, but i am really satisfied with the quality and comfort of the table. i cannot speak personally of the other brands, but believe custom craftworks to be a quality brand also.

I ended up buying a chair off of ebay called

New-Heavy-Duty-purple -Portable-Massage-Chair

I cannot post the link since I have not posted 10 posts yet.

But I will say that this chair broke the first day I got it.

The wood used for all of the padded surfaces is very thin 1/4" plywood that is not a good grade.

My wife went to get into the chair for the second time after I had mad a seat height adjustment. She put her right knee on the right knee support and it cracked in half. (She is 5'8" @ 140 or so) so This is totally a bad design. I only planned on using this at home for us so no big deal. But If I were aa pro on the job and this happened I would be embarrased.


Are the more ezpensive chairs made better then this. Would you put all of your weight in the center of one of the knee rests??


I did fix it. I took off both knee supports and removed the leather/vinal and padding from the thin wood base. I then replace the wood base with 3/4" oak that I cut to the same size as the original. I attachet the vinal and padding in a similar fasion with staples.

It ended up looking perfect and I could stand on one knee support int the center (I'm 5'10" @ 200lbs or so)

There is a reason why the professional chairs were mentioned in the above posts. They are made to use regularly and for professional use.

I don't know about putting all my weight into a knee rest, as it is a knee "rest", but my stronglite hasn't had any problems and it's been 8+ years.
