Charges for IHM

Hi all

Can you tell me what prices you charge for IHM, eg upper back and shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. The going rate in the South near Portsmouth and Chichester seems to vary from about £20 to £35. I was thinking of charging £22, but someone told me a lady at a sports centre was charging £12!

What are your thoughts?

Hi Deb,

It depends what kind of treatment you are giving, doesn't it? My standard 'do it in your lunch hour ' 'dry and clothed' IHM routine is 30 minutes, I charge £12. A deeper experience, with the client gowned, lasting 50 minutes and using essential oils along with more moves, is £20. Northern prices, but they illustrate where the differing costs come in.

Yes it depends on the type of treatment as obviously you can adapt it, I was thinking of the full blown treatment lasting about 30 mins. I shall have a look round this area to see what the average is, but just wondered what everyone else charged.

Initially I thought £25 was a bit expensive, thinking would I want to pay that myself, but then when I go to my physio for 30 mins I pay her £25, she does a bit of manipulation sometimes and then puts her electronic pads on.

It's always difficult trying to set prices up.

Physios, osteopaths and chiropractors can charge a higher rate that us mere holistic therapists (they do train longer and their training is more expensive), so don't try to draw comparisons.

Don't forget also that someone renting a room in a clinic or centre will usually charge more as they have room rental to cover.

Hi all

I charge between £6-7 for a 15 minute clothed/dry session in the workplace (so £12 for half an hour sounds about right) and £20 for a 50 minute session with oils on gowned clients at the retreat I work in.

HI Lesley,

I am not sure if the public is aware of length/cost of training... As well as ongoing professional development requirements.
I will start offering treatments also from a centre at the end of the month (I usually work from home) and yes, my prices will be higher there since I have to give the centre money for using their premisses. I do Shiatsu and Reiki. I charge £25 (£30 at the centre) for one hour. The price range in Aberdeen is £25-45.

Deb, being the "cheapest in town" is not necessarly the best way to attract clients. "best deal in town" sounds a better goal to me!

Artemis, I couldn't agree more re cheapness. I'm not looking to be the cheapest around that's for sure. I was shocked to hear someone was only charging £12 near me which I thought was a little cheap really especially as there is quite a bit involved in the IHM.

I realise a lot is due to any overheads and also where you live in the UK. I think £20 - £22 is reasonable for the whole treatment.

As always in life you get what you pay for, a new beauty salon near me is cheaper than everyone else and you can see why when you go there.

We charge £17 for 40 mins. Actually think this is a bit cheap, but it is in line with the other therapies. ie. no oils, couch roll etc.

You can look at our website for all our costs, that might help.

Am in the North though!

I agree that the public are not aware of the level or cost of training for different practitioners, but it is a fact of life that physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors can and do charge a lot more than those of us practising other holistic therapies and they usually have no trouble getting clients (or patients). Maybe it is also because they are regulated, but all I was saying was most of us are not able to charge their kind of fees.

I know that one lady in Waterlooville charges £15/session and the treatment centre I go to in Winchester (although I haven't had IHM there) charges £29/session. Having just done IHM myself, I don't think that £22 is unreasonable and would agree with the comments above that "cheapest isn't always best". Go with your gut instinct - you can't put a price on good health and IHM certainly works towards achieving/maintaining this.

I just qualified and I have looked around and most prices in London suburbs are around £20 for 30 mins

I have had flyers printed and business cards done and have been handing out and outing testers etc but I am just not getting any apts. Any suggestions?

The people I have given a massage on have really enjoyed it and I am hoping that they recommend me but they say that they have given my number but still nothing. Is it always slow at the beginning?

Just need reassurance.

I agree with TigerBee, IHM is what I do least of. Not sure why this is. I am hoping to do treatments in local business (my next business developemt idea) and think mayby IHM will be more popular in that environment because clients wont have to undress and the treatment can be fairly quick (15, 20 or 30 mins) but there again, the ladies probably wont want their hair styles messed up when they are at work. Will have to see.

I was thinking of selling the idea of the treatments to the management as a way of reducing staff stress, raising morale etc. I am not sure whether manicure and pedicure (great though I think they are myself) would be perceived as a health benefit. Worth trying though. As to getting started, my plan is to ring up and get a name, write to them giving details of what you could offer and then follow up with a phone call. And keep fingers crossed.

it's quite difficult to get started isnt it. I suppose you've just got to make a list of ideas and work your way through them. Some will be successful and some wont. Thing is not to get disheartened and keep trying and I am sure you will be successful

Hi Girls

Keep plugging away with offering IHM in the workplace. You need to write lots of letters followed by telephone calls and keep at it. Eventually a couple of companies will think it is a good idea and will ask you to try it out. Don't worry about ladies getting their hair messed up. They don't mind at all. (They carry their brushes and hairspray with them sometimes!). I offer 15 minute sessions in a small room with some relaxing music and believe me, they love it!

I would be careful of offering manicure/pedicure as you will need a separate room and they might not like the smell of the varnish. Also they might worry about spillages.
