Update on Shanghai

Tried Hengsan (spelling?) Picardie Hotel (in Frensh quarter)

This was BEFORE the expo opened !

Absolutely no problem with visitors. Entering with visitors after 11pm was no problem. (always tip the door-man)
No phonecalls or un-asked visits to the room.
Good price quality hotel, acceptable location.

I liked the bars in Tongren road, (Manhatten Bar) and usually found there what I needed.

I always go to China in 'business hotels', and sometimes, the hotel is chosen for me.

Phonecalls are indeed rare in the hotels I stayed.
But I never had any problems with a visitor. (and some of them had a very pronounced dresscode. There could not have been a lot of doubt...)
Nor did I ever witness other hotel guests getting approached, even with 'obvous' guests.

Experiences :
Recent (2008-now)
Beijing : Xidan Mercure : no phonecalls, visitors are no problem anytime of night.
Suzhou : Renaissance : no phonecalls, visitors are no prob. (didn't try after 11pm)
Suzhou : Tongli Lakeview : no phonecalls, I had no opportunity, but saw others enter no problem with 'obvious visitors'
Yichang: Taohualing : no phonecalls, only had the hotel massage girl, didn't try visitors
HongKong : Renaissance : no phonecalls, no problem with visitors, including sleepover
Shanghai :
- Renaissance Pu dong : no phonecalls, no problem with visitors, including sleepover
- JW Marriott : no phonecalls, found what I needed in the hotel bar (yes, in the bar of the JW!)
- Airport Hotel : no phonecalls, didn't try anything there

dating from 2007-2006
Zhanjiang Crown Plaza : no phones, visitors were ok, could even invite them to breakfast (which was included in my roomrate )
Shenzen: Pavilion : phone stopped after 2nd refusal, visitors were common sight in the lobby.
Kunshan : Traders Hotel : no phones, didn't try visitors, but saw many guests having no problem to invite them.

Others are from 2005 and older and maybe outdated

Been hearing that major cities: Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, etc. are upping their security and not allowing prostitutes into the hotels. You'd have to secretely bring em in and escourt them out.


Can ppl verify or help with how to identify these hotels?


The ones I've stayed in sheralton, etc. are pretty 5 stars and they don't do anything like that. I like getting phone calls 5 to 10 times asking if I need a massage after 9! haha. Makes me feel wanted. haha



But I imagine the gov't and a few hi class establishments want to install a more family-like or business-only environment.
