How many minutes are in an hour?

For those of you with a private practice, how many actual minutes of bodywork does the client get in an hour long session with you?

I currently give a solid 60 mimutes of hands on work when someone comes in for an hour long session. This sometimes means that I am actually with the client for 70-85 minutes.

I'm curious as to how others work.

I aim for 60 sometimes a few minutes here or there... I can't do anything shorter, since I always go over.

Always 60 minutes in an hour. That does mean that each hour massage requires approximately 1 1/2 hour of my time when you include the set up as well as clean up, time for client to undress and redress, take care of business, reschedule, etc.

I have friends who work in spas that book every hour on the hour. The therapists are expected to do a 50 minute massage and to have 10 minutes in between to change the table. Of course, they have a receptionist who greets the clients, handles the money and the scheduling.

For me,most of my returning clients always get a solid hour on the table-they just come,go to the treatment area and hop on the table. New clients get about 70 minutes,including intake.I try to schedule 10-15 between clients for linen change,washing hands,a quick snack and wrist stretching.

New clients: 60-70 minutes of hands-on, plus about 10 for an intake, etc., and about 5-10 after.

Returning: 60-70 hands-on, plus about 5 on each end.

I always ask about thier time frame, though, because I have had a few clients who plan for 60 minutes, and nothing more. That is a bummer when that happens 'cause I find 60 minutes is rarely enough time of hands-on, much less anything else like asking if they can turn thier head.

a minimum of 60 minutes, though this varies with each client. i sometimes go way over. though, if it looks like we're going to need to go over, i always ask if they have somewhere they need to be anytime soon. i had a massage once where the mt went over and almost made me late getting to my client. yuck! there went all of his beneficial work.

A solid 60 here too. I leave 45 between appointments so I don't have to rush with anything.

Spa I currently work at allows for 60 minutes hands on and there is 15 minutes on the schedule between sessions for the client to redress and vacate the room. In that time I must get them a drink of water and reset the room for the next massage.

With my personal clients it's usually 60-75 minutes hands on. But that can go as much as 90 minutes... it totally depends on the client. However, my personal clients are outcalls... so if timing is an issue because they have somewhere else to be immediately after the massage, they need to say so before I lay my hands on them. :roll:

An hour session is 60 minutes at my place. I schedule 30 minutes between clients. I mistakenly thought 30 minutes might not be enough time between clients when I moved to my own place. Reason being, because in the old place I would change the room over while a client was getting their shoes on and fixing their hair. I would use this time to chat with a client as well. Now though, the client comes out of the room when they are finished and I dont get a chance to change the room over until after the client has left. But, since I dont have hair dressers to chat with any more, me going to talk to them or them coming to talk to me... I find I am having MORE free time between clients than in the old place!

I do outcalls at the moment, so when a person books a 60 minute massage I tell them that I will be there between x & y time (a 15 minute window, traffic really sucks around here!)

I tell them to plan 90 minutes for a 60 minute hands on session, for set-up break down ect. This way there are no surprises. 8)

Sixty minutes to the hour and I block out 90 minutes for each hour session (two hours if the client is new) so that neither the client nor myself is rushed. I think rushing before or after a massage is the most illogical and unproductive thing in the world. That also allows "slush" time for extra work or questions and to work in a full session even if traffic makes them a little late. Same for outcalls: I arrive 15 minutes ahead to set up and allow a half hour after the session ends to be back out the door, whether I'll actually need it or not.

Trying to cram 60 minutes of work into 50 minutes (or less, if they aren't punctual) at the spa and the t079 pace to get clients out and set up for the next really cemented my mind to do things the opposite in my own practice. After all, no matter how wonderful a session is, it's how great you feel afterwards before you have to move to get up that is the very best part!

I guess I'm the black sheep around here with timing.

For a 60 minute at the spa I usually end just a few minutes under the hour to allow the client enough time to chill and get up slowly from the table... as mentioned before nothing sucks more then having a great treatment only to bounce off the table and rush out. We have 15 minutes between services but even with that I've been tight sometimes with clients who ask a lot of questions before the treatment or fall asleep at the end.

In a private setting I was infamous for going over... even back in school I would go over and get in trouble for it. Now a days if I do an outcall or session at my place I'm pretty good with timing, but if the client has a specific problem I usually spend more time to make sure I've addressed it as best as I can, but I always ask to make sure they won't be rushed at the end.

60 minutes to the hour. I leave a full half hour between clients as well, which I can do only because I can set my own time up in private practice. I actually don't mind if my "hour" massage is 50 minutes when I go to the spa, as long as the spa is upfront about how much actual table time I am paying for.

I have always gone by the rule that a client pays us for 60 minutes of our time. That 60 minutes yes includes the hands on time, but also includes the time that it takes for them to dress and undress before and after the massage. I don't know about you but I for one don't get paid to stand around. I get paid to work. I generally allow about 3 minutes to undress, for the "experienced" massage goer that is about all it takes for them to undress. I generally allow 5 minutes at the end for them to dress. This takes 8 minutes off the hands on time. Thus only allowing me about 52 minutes of hands on time. If they spend their time in the bathroom that is not my fault. They booked from say 1pm to 2pm. not 1pm to 2:15pm. They don't pay extra for the other 15 minutes. And the more you give them as "freebies" the more they will take advaneforum.xxxe of you over time. Believe me, with over 10 years in the field I know all about those that take advaneforum.xxxe.

My clients get 58-60 minutes hands on for an hour booked. I don't charge for intake time, thus an hour appointment is scheduled to require 75 minutes. I also don't charge them to go potty. I haven't had trouble with clients trying to "take advaneforum.xxxe."

I sell massages - I don't sell consultations or undressing time - so when a client books an hour, they get an hour of massage, with additional time allowed for consultation, undressing, dressing and feedback.

Having said that, I levy my prices to take into account the length of time required in full, including the consultation etc.

I don't do hour massages but if I did they would probably be about 70 minutes. The shortest time I do is 90 minutes with most of my sessions being 120 minutes. I actually prefer doing 180 minutes.

I agree with breesky.

I always book 1/2 hour between appointments so I can go over if I need, or if we start late clients still dont have to run into eachother.

My hours are a solid 60 minutes, assuming they start on time.

If I am the reason we start late then it is still the FULL hour, usually with a few extra minutes added on for the inconvenience.

If they are the reason we are late because we were talking about their history or something else relevent, its still a FULL hour from start time.

If they are show up late it depends on how often they show up late. If they are never/hardly ever late I will usually give the full hour from start time, depending on if it sets my schedule too far back for that day.

If they are routinely late then its an hour from the time they were supposed start, with little exceptions. It usually only takes a few times of that and they start coming on time.
