How to introduce the character?

I am currently writing a novel where I need to introduce a very important character early on in the story. Here's whats happening...The main character had a very close friend as a child and therefore before the story. She moves away and they loose contact. Latter on in the story, they meet up, he saves her life, they fall in love and yada yada yada. My problem is that I have no clue how to mention her without going into detail or giving any clues about what happens next. I find it quite hard to start a story then a few chapters latter bring in this girl who is latterly a main character. Help please!
@Ana Great advice...but the truth is that I have no clue how it should happen!
@David Thanks for the advice...there was one thing I forgot to mention. Its a fantasy book, and the begging of the book leading up to their meeting is a funeral and a long travel to the place where this girl lives.

Just write it the way you see it. You can always go back and write a new version of the chapter once you have it laid out. I have three or four versions of one chapter, just so I can find the perfect one, and then sometimes I combine them. I think by doing this, you can become your character, learn who she truly is, and write the chapter the way you want it without spilling the secrets

I think your writing form the male perspective right. After he meets her and all that. And he start falling in love she take him to her bedroom you know to talk privately with out her parents eavesdropping and he looks around while she went back down the stairs to get some food or whatever or answer her parents. And his looking and he sees something on a shelf that look like something he remember. He pick it up it could be a nick knack or whatever like for example. It a jade rabbit with a chip in the right ear. He touches it as he remember how the rabbit had gotten a chip and then how he had given it to a girl that he had been best friends when he was only four or five but not young enough to remember clearly but he remember the rabbit.

That's never easy for me, either. Maybe something like he's in a bookstore or some such place and a customer is arguing with the clerk. The customer uses a phrase during the argument that she used to say and he thinks back to what his life was like when she was still a part of it.
