Can anyone help me with some info? Do you need a formal qualification to teach IHM? I thought A&P would be essential--but have been on a course where
teacher was not qualified!!Is IHM regulated or not?Hope you can advise me
as I have a horrible feeling I have been ripped off[][][]

I'm not sure that it is regulated, seems to be a bit of a grey area from what I can make out. I've been looking at what's on offer myself and there are lots of IHM courses out there. They seem to vary enormously from one day workshops with no study element or exam, to 20 week diploma courses that have both practical and written exams at the end and case study work to do, as well as other course work. I suppose that what you want to get out of the course determines the one you choose. If you want to be an insured practitioner you would probably want to think about the diploma course or a similar certificated course, so you get in depth knowledge and practice and as much experience as possible. If it's something you'd like to be able to practise for pleasure on friends and family you might make a different choice. I'm sorry you're feeling swizzed about your course. Did they not deliver what they promised, or were your expectations not met because the course objectives and its nature weren't made clear?

sorry you feel you are being ripped off. as Siobhan says this seems to be a grey area . I did a 12 week diploma course and was already qualified in massage. however Siobhan also says

I don't think it matters what course you do regards insurance as I know someone who did a one day course and got insurance from the same reputable company that I did.

If you feel you haven't learnt enough to enable you to practise then you should really talk to the college or awarding body about it

I did VTCT IHM aot 18 months ago and as far as I know my tutor had no teaching qualifications, although she was qualified in many therapies. I must say that I was very satisfied with the course.

I think that a sound knowledge of A & P is important with whatever therapy you are practising/teaching. Was it a recognised course?

No it wasnt run by a college or a recognised body,I will certainly not do another course with them!!!I did speak to IGPP who said they thought it was really wrong of them to run a course when they were not qualified to do so.

I really feel for you but do try not to get depressed about it these things happen to the best of us. My IHM coure (VTCT) was a bit of a shambles but most of us managed to pass the course. I went on to do further (ITEC) courses at a college near Ellesmere Port and that was even worse. How ITEC could have approved such a college is quite beyond belief. I and others went through months of hell.....eventually transferring to a college which was 105mile round trip to finish our courses.

When the exams came round things went from bad to worse........2 days notice of theory exams etc. (8 hours theory in one day). I was even expected to travel 3 hours by car each way to do my practical exams (which were 3 hours).......they were cancelled the afternoon before []

If and when I do further courses I shall certainly check out the tutor's experience and the college's reputation, something that never occurred to me to do before......too damn trusting for words!!!!
