You'll recall I stated opening up the island would overall have a negative effect imho.

So, let's see - more traffic on roads (increased travel times and pollution), spreading tourists around the island more (unnecessarily making areas less peaceful, more unsustainable businesses opening in quiet areas). The busier areas are set up to deal with higher numbers of tourists who don't move around that much. Making it easier for them to get around en masse would change the island in a way I think negative (hence imho).

There's much to object about tuk tuks but that doesn't mean cleaning them up can only have desirable consequences.

Quite a few bgs I know went home for Songkran and havent come back. 3 I know well who are staying home 3 months for the first time since they arrived, 5 years back!
In soi One Man in Karon, there is a bar that just had a 2 million refit thats available for free for a year, you just pay the rent at 15k a month till the owner comes back ( he's working back at home to raise money)...if he does.
Another 2 are now just rent and no key money, the Soi owner wont chuck them out for now, in the hope that they will at least pay some back rent. Having said that , a mate who bought the very front bar turned over 17k the other night.
His other bar further down is doing nothing.
In Kata, a whole heap of bars were pulled down prior to last high season, so I dont think that 'too many bars' can be blamed there, rather its a general shift in demographics in my opinion.

even places like soi sea pearl and otop would benefit from a hop on hop off baht bus system in patong IMO.
i wonder how many tourists who frequent Bangla know about them or Sunset Plaza (Beach,Dolphin,BC bars)?
it`s the only way patong can grow.

Kata/Karon has always been very quiet in low season (and many bars & restaurants do close during this time of the year) while Patong has usually been OK all year round, last year's low season was one of the worst in many years for Patong. I guess this low season will not be much better.

Funny tho isnt it.. I have no idea how this years low season looks there, but this is just the same annual refrain, bars going to the wall, people losing it, everyone praying for a high season, etc etc etc.

But every year theres more arrival than last year, every year theres the same rush of people to open or buy bars, the prices get higher and higher, the key money increases, the drinks prices increases, yet theres still (see above) bars going to the wall, people losing it, everyone praying for a high season, etc etc etc.

Its like this constant hope over experience, year after year. Changing demographics sure, but also just saturation in the market and then another wave of 'me toos'.

Which one is that? Must say Boom Boom is about the only one working good there, and even they have less customers now. I must try the last bar in the row from Boom Boom one day. Some nice coyotee's.

if i were to open a bar in any of these smaller villages i would set it up as a more family friendly

i wouldn't have the full on sexy girlie bar
look more for cute staff with proper uniforms where the families aren't intimidated to come in but still girl's in there to have a chat with for single guys

Well back when they first got the land Ott said he had 10 years, tho I will say I have no certainty whose the land holder... And Ott built up the bars based on pre buyers key money to pretty much build them.. He and his old wife of back then (jeab) were hard on Kim and me taking what became the dolphin.
