Muscle based Chair Massage

I recently completed a course in Muscle Based Chair massage a few weeks back and at a function over the weekend I massaged ten individuals in the chair. Many of whom described the treatment with one word at the end - "Wow!", one went as far as to describe it as being "the best massage I have ever had!".I know traditionally Chair Massage is Meridian / Accupressure based, I was wondering if anyone else offers Muscle based treatments.Oh and I love working with the chair ... it really allows you to become a true "Ambassador of Touch", a few of the people I massaged in my Avilla II chair at the weekend had never experienced a massage before and I think will happily give it ago again.ThanksFoz xxx

Foz - interesting site. The books also look interesting. I'm not sure I'm up to spending big bucks for a trip to the UK to take classes (even if the money would be a tax write off). In their book;NO HANDS Chair Massage;, David Woodhouse and Gerry Pyves make a clear distinction between meridian-based Chair Massage and muscle-based Chair Massage; Muscle-based bodywork releases muscle FIRST and the meridian flow changes as a SECONDARY effect, whilst meridian-based bodywork releases meridian flow FIRST and the muscles relax as a SECONDARY effect

Foz,I guess you'd call the type of chair massage I do "Muscle Based".... after reading a little. To be honest, I didn't know there was a meridian based chair massage, so I am learning something new everyday.I do use my hands though, as well as my elbows and forearms for chair massage.Thanks again!

Very interesting.  No-Hands would be a very interesting massage to give and receive.  Not sure I would personally like working without using my hands though.  The techniques that I use for chair massage could be called muscle based.  I use many of the same techniques I use while working with clients on the table with chair massage.  I use my hands and elbows primarily.  I work the muscles and don't do too much with acupressure.

Thanks for all the feedback guys - appreciated.Masthera The No Hands massage is great to both give and receive, it is one of the most powerful massages I have had - and it doesn't hurt, and it is also zero-strain to the therapist!!Unfortunately I haven't got the link to the document for reference but I believe one day spent using traditional massage techniques is the equivilent of approximately 10tons of pressure on your wrist!The No Hands technique was bourne out of nesscesity, Gerry having spent ten years building a very successful practice. Then one morning at breakfast while standing in the kitchen holding a cup of tea a shooting pain like molten lava shot up his arm. From that moment he wasn't able to use any of the strokes he had been taught and then spent years developing No Hands a zero-strain and very effective way of performing full body massages.This weekend I am about to do my Advanced Practitioner course and am very excited about it.Key to No Hands massage are seven Postural Secrets, the  secrets to every stroke and position used in massage - all of which are discussed in the book. If you ever come over to the UK I would strongly recommend finding a No Hands practioner to experience a massage. I think the hardest Postural Secret to really master is that of Falling - using your body to really power the stroke.I will be getting some pictures of me giving a client a No Hands massage for my website to give an indication of the strokes and positions used.Its interesting that several of you have commented that your chair massage is probably muscle based. All other training I have seen is Accupressure.If any of you have any questions about No Hands, No Hands Chair massage or Massage in the UK please feel free to ask! I do some muscle based procedures too, have to! When I chair massage corporate gigs, or demos,  its an all day thing, without a break, usually *lol*I don't know about "Falling" though....I'm 5'10" and weigh a few extra stones.It will be great to see your pictures!

Wow Fozz, that looks quite cool!!!I never really thought about it before you mentioned it but my chair massage technique is definitely muscle based too.  Like some others, I have never heard of an accupressure based technique.  I would love to travel to Europe and study...maybe we could get a group up and go?!

Muscle based Chair Massage

While I haven't read that much about it, it sounds like "muscle-based" chair massage is just like therapeutic table massage.  In Therapeutic Table Massage, you actively "engage" the muscles to help break up adhesions, restore circulation and get the muscle to return to its maximum length (stretch is a bad word at my school).  We use our hands, forearms and elbows, but we learn to use our lower body to generate the power and pressure.  The upper appendages are there to mainly be a "contact point" between you and the muscle you're engaging.At least that's the way I understand it. I'd have to say my chair massage is muscle based as well. I mainly use my hands and forearms during chair, with stretching included. There's a technique that I'm wanting to learn that goes GREAT with chair massage, with very little invasion, but I cannot even remember the name of it. *sigh*
