Need some advice re guinea pigs for practice.

Hi

I only have two guinea pigs. My wife, who doesn't really like being massaged and a cyclist friend. I'm about 1/4 of the way through my remdial massage course.

Everyone I ask likes the idea of a massage but won't go through with it.

My friend has been a good subject, I sorted the stiff shoulder he had for years. His Semimembrinosis was really tight and i've managed to free that up.

But, I really need some new faces. I'm not sure if it would be ethical to advertise in the local library as long as people are aware that I'm a student and I was careful re contra-indications. But there is the question of insurance.

I obviously can't advertise in "therapy-swaps" as i'm not qualified.

I'm sure others have had this problem. How did you get around it.

I'm no where near you so can't help. If you don't want to try a therapy swap just ask for willing volunteers to help you out. I would be happy to do that with someone near to me so I'm sure others would.

Thanks so much for the quick replies. I can't post in the swaps as one of the conditions is that you have to be qualified.

Institute is in Bury and so unable to help with volunteers.

try contacting local cycling/ running clubs etc they are usually a good source of willing volunteers, the down side is that those who get a free treatment to help with your caes stdies will seldom become paying clients.

It would be a good idea to sort out some student insurance, usually, when ou enrol colleges ask that you obtain student insurance, costing around £50 for the year. You could then advertise for studies as others have mentioned.

There is nothing wrong with advertising for clients if you have insurance, explain that you are a student and offer treatments for free as part of the course.

You could try a local gym or sports centre. If you could talk to the staff (managers, fitness trainers, personal trainers) perhaps they would agree to a treatment, if you impressed them, you may then get referrals. I do agree about running and cycling teams, I think I have learnt the most from working on these people, moreso than regular gymgoers.

Sometimes, past students crave treatments, I wonder if your tutor has links with any, or if you could do a guinea pig swap, would your previous case study agree to be treated by one of your colleagues, in return you could treat one of your fellow students studies.

Do you know anyone who works in IT? Or who works long hours on a PC. As it is a remedial course, you aren't limited to sports injuries only. You might find that if you find one such person, they can ask around and maybe find others.

I have a few regular and trusted clients who I experiment on, they get the benefits of previewing all my treatments and I get the benefit of them being a case study. I do this in particular for clients who have long term problems or who may not be able to afford loads of treatments so they come periodically as needed. They do appreciate the offer.
