Ringing the bell

There were just three of us in the bar, the bar keeper, my girl and me. I was going to buy a round of drinks for us and as a stupid jesture I rang the bell. Sudenly, other people came into the bar and I ended up paying for twice as many drinks.

So, how does the bell work? I thought that it was for just for the people actually in the bar. Is it for everyone who can hear the Bell?

Not sure of the exact 'rules' as such, but i'd be pretty pissed off, if i rang the bell and people came in for a free drink, and can't really see the bar allowing this aswell? Was it a fixed price such as 1000 baht for a shot for everyone in the bar?

Which bar was it? And no it's for Patrons only. Also depends if it is a fixed price, typical 1000 baht, with the bar's special shot,s or a per drink order which could be high.

You are correct , when you ring the bell it is for people already drinking there , when you saw the others arrive after the bell rang , you should have made sure you were only charged for the three drinks , the Mamasan took the p1ss , I wouldn't drink there again

As mentioned some bars have a fixed price of 1000 baht for shooters to encourage ringing in busy areas, but normally once you ring the bell everyone with a drink already would get the same drink repeated ie a Chang drinker should be given another Chang and not a different drink , same with someone drinking a soft drink or a mixed drink

Sounds to me he rang the bell and it was a 1000bt shot for all type deal. So even if people came and sat down after the bell rang makes no difference, 1000bt for 3 shots or 23 shots.

However it was the deal whereby everyone in the bar gets a drink of their choice then it should have been for only people in the bar at that given time i.e the 3 of you. For the staff to give anyone coming to the bar after the bell ring, a drink of their choice is taking the piss big time and i would have point blank refused there and then to pay for any more than 3 drinks....

The first scenario is ok IMO but the second is outright piss take!!!!

I used to to give 100thb "tips" to the girls at MTB, for showing me their tits. The gals would que up and one by one, they'd drop their coverings for my peek. Then I'd slip a hundred between the cleavage.

I was usually pretty drunk (had to be) when I did this, and I didn't realize there were 15-20 girls working at MTB?

It was later disclosed that girls from the neighboring bars would join the que. 555 (which was OK by me)

A favourite trick of Dannys of the Offshore Bar was to wait until the cheap charlie one chang all night timeshare touts had taken 2 steps outside the bar and then ring the bell. He would then flick them the finger as the quickly tried to backpeddle back into the bar. :great:

I very rarely ring the bell any more but did often when I was coming here on holiday, the same attitude would apply if and when I next ring it. I'm ringing the bell because I want to buy people a drink, I do not care if they change the drink they are having, I do not care if someone slips and gets a quick free beer, I'm not ringing a bell to show off, I'm ringing it because I enjoying myself, I was on holiday and it pleased me to do it.

My thoughts are if you are not wanting to buy people a beer, then don't ring the bell.

As for all the crap about do not go back to that bar and the rest of it, there are no rules for ringing the bell, Mamasan is doing nothing wrong. Who exactly is being grumpy again?, oh yeah me cos I don't come on holiday and begrudge buying a few people a beer or enjoying myself, yeah right!!!!!

Snowy it wasn't the op's post it was all the ones after him, that made me react.

And boys we are talking about 3 extra people not a whole squadron.

Thinking on this, no one should ring the bell if a few drinks bother them. Wonder if there would have been the same reaction if it was 3 additional good looking bar girls???

I was not particular concerned about paying for a few extra drinks but I was really interested in whether this is what usually happens when you ring the bell. The extra people did not come from the street but from somewhere out the back of the building. Pehaps they figured that was near enough.

Actually the atmosphere in the place was quite congenial and I had a good time.

I think you are wrong Dodger , the OP decided to ring the bell for three people , not anyone else . he asked what the usual protocol was so I and others answered. Personally I do not like drinking shooters , so would never ring for the 1000 baht
option, when I choose ring it is usually because I am the only customer or there are a
few that I have been having a chat with, for me it is an easy way to buy all the girls in
a bar a drink when I am having a good time.
What the OP described it the same as having your bill padded or tricked by a tout ( only 500 for a beer , you are on holiday after all .... )
I don't mind spending a bit of cash , but I hate being ripped off
