Anyone have any fisrt hand experience on mongering in Tapachula Mexico? Wide open? Fairly safe?

Am sorry to contradict you, but a curfew means there are no activities, plus no one else allowed on the streets.

A voluntary business curfew means that those that want to open, can open, as well that want to close early, can close early.

I don't know if you read the "other forum" in which we are both members, but a monger traveling to Reynosa said the Zona was closed for a couple of days... now it's working again.

Beavis, it isn't an impossed curfew.
It is an option implemented by the local chamber of commerce due to the escalade of violence at the border towns.
I don't know if you read my post at the "other Forum", the one that 2 week ago a group of bandidos went on a robbing spree, taking loot on a whooping 45 business starting in Rio Bravo and ending in Matamoros?
INcluding in Reynosa the main Chilis and a Sanborns?

This was a message to the elite army troops that had arrived in Reynosa... about their futile presence there.

Army just said they were there to act upon them, not to patrol the steets of the cities...

I don't think the US has anything on it. This has been imposed by the Mexican Government. Mexican government does not have to go through the formalities that the US does. If they want to do something they can act quickly. Nonetheless many of the border towns are involved in this.

For the life of me I can't find any recent article online about a travel warning to the Mex border towns from the State Dept. If anyone heard the same thing please chime in.

Beav, I heard something on the news yesterday about the U.S. State Department advising US citizens to stay away from the Mexican border towns. This seems like a big deal, especially since there is so much interest on mpnet about them. I'll try to find the article and link to it.

I went down yesterday and spent the night having some dental work done. At 10:00 p.m. everything closed down except Oxxo and the street taco vendors. Apparently it is a new curfew mandated by the Mexican government to help curb the drug traffic. Nobody knows how long it will last but I was told it is all border towns from Nuevo Laredo to Matamoros. The details are not clear as of now but it is indeed happening. If anybody has already gone down for the night this info will be too late but I would check to make sure before I went. Also the passport rule has been extended but if you do not have one they are requesting a birth certificate with your driver's license.
