Actually it will probably be long after June of 2009 as that is the most recent date given...however it has been pushed back so many times, that who knows if it will ever come into effect. Once you find places actually selling the border pass....then we will have some idea of it it is going to be implemented.

I think you will be out of luck hoping this eventually won't become the law ... It has nothing to do with liberal or conservative .. its a matter of security and with terrorism the way it is and the immigration issue being as hot as it is .... I think you're out of luck .. Some of us do not need a passport and although we may
have the money we don't like sitting in an aluminum tube
with wings for 16 hours just to go mongering...............
For me its the point.....I may have the money but I can't
justify paying just to cross a border......I am hoping this
law will fail.....you don't need a passport until June of 09
to cross the border by foot or car.....There will be a new
liberal president who will end the war and probably get
rid of this passport law by then. I don't like paying cabbies
any more than I have to, just take me to the zona.........
and NO I do not want to go to an MP........If the cabbie
does not annoy me or pester me theres an extra $2.00 in
it for him

I know a taxi driver in San Diego who also provides tour guide services to TJ and makes a nice dollar doing it .. He takes business men who come into to town ..new to the area but want to experience TJ and don't know their way around. ..Being a Taxi driver its usually his customers ... people always ask taxi drivers where to go ... then he will offer his service ... they are usually Business men who want to just get there safely, have drinks, get a women and get back to their hotels without any hassles ... Its a nice side business for him and they pay him well for his knowledge ... Often paying for a girl for him along with paying his rate ...

I think the statistic is about 22% have passports, which is very low for a developed country. Why not get one? even if you don't need it for Mexico there are other, much better, countries to visit. travel and learn something, or just have sex with foreign women.

Regarding the tour guides, sounds like a waste of money, but I can see the draw if you know nothing about TJ and want your hand held. I wonder how many of these guides get kickbacks from bars for dragging you into their establishment.

Well if you were crossing in an illegal way, and your defense was I am too cheap to get a passport or border pass, you have a tough case to prove. Even if they would believe that it is still illegal. They are going to think you are blazing the trail for pollos or drug smugglers, and it won't look good.

Not all illegal aliens are deported immediately....some serve jail or prison time first and then sent back. I don't know why some do and some don't do time, but it is not a case of another crime...well if they created another crime, certainly they do time and then get deported...but I have known illegals to be in prison for nothing more than being illegal.

Brant, unfortunately the way laws work is black and white, if you have committed an offense and are caught you are charged, it doesnt matter if the whole wolrd come across illegallly and not caught !
The press can do their sing and shout, but that doesnt affect the law, unless the laws are amended !

I really doubt anything would come of it and the charges would probably be dropped even if it is a federal offense. Here's why....They are not going to charge a US citizen with a felony for not crossing at a point of interest because the press would be all over the government for charging a US citizen with a felony when people run across illegally everyday. Thats IF you got caught, chances are you won't........but theres always a chance.......

Illegals that aren't felons are deported from the US back to Mexico.

Yes we do inforce it. The jails and prisons are full of people on illegal entry and illegal re-entry charges. Sure people get through, but the long lines at the border are because of the enforcement of illegal entry of people and other things(like drugs and guns).

It is also a federal offense to be in the US illegally. But we don't seem to enforce that one, do we?!

I know that it is a felony for a US citizen to cross the border at any place other than an authorized port of entry....It is a Federal Offense.

I think if you weigh the cost of a passport/border pass against having a felony and doing time, the passport/border pass option would be a bargain.

It sounds as if you live in SO CAL. If so, then in most cities there are community centers where you drop off your passport application. Just pay the fee, show your ID, and provide them with a copy of another ID (birth certificate) and that is it.

Then within 12 weeks you get the passport.

There was nobody in line, no waiting ,etc.
