What is Tui Na?

Tui Na or Tuina, either is correct (pronounced twee naw). While Shiatsu is a Japanese modality, Tuina is Chinese. How it was taught to me, it is not for relaxation purposes, that's for sure. It tends to be quite vigorous using accupressure points and a specific routine for each body part. The instructor who taught me learned in China and says that there, if people aren't in pain getting treatment, they feel like they aren't getting their money's worth. I can't imagine anyone requesting a full Tuina treatment though I do incorporate things that I learned from it in my work. I learned gua sha and cupping taking this modality though I don't believe they belong to it exclusively.

Another slant on the term Tuina: I was taught that Tuina (Chinese) was known as Amma in Japan before it went underground and reemerged with the new name of Shiatsu. I have had it done and have used Tuina (one movement) on my clients. There is a book out called The Complete Book of Tuina....it is something I would love to continue with considering I am a Shiatsu practitioner. ib1gypsy, you are correct to say that people in China don't think they are getting their money's worth if they don't hurt during the session, same is true in Japan and Thailand, but we also need to realize that Chinese, Japanese, or Thai massage isn't at all like the massage we have here in the West. Most of us couldn't take more than 45 minutes of traditional Japanese Shiatsu which is mostly walking on the Bladder meridian with those bars overhead. This is not Ashiatsu, btw. Here in the US, Shiatsu and massage are used interchangeably when talking about Shiatsu. Fact is, Shiatsu is NOT massage even though we see terms like Shiatsu massage all the time. My organization, the AOBTA, is working to make that distinction known and more acceptable. Incidentally, even though the "Father" of Shiatsu is considered to be Namikoshi, the true "Father" of Shiatsu is a man by the name of Temai Tempaku. Namikoshi got the credit because he coined the term Shiatsu.

I'm a Zen Shiatsu therapist who has a minor in Tuina. It's too much work! If I did Tuina, I'd be taking showers between clients!

I already use one Tuina technique. I want to learn the others so I can include them in my Shiatsu sessions if I feel using them would be beneficial to the client as opposed to the techniques I already know. I have no intention of doing a complete Tuina routine except for the experience.

I did 120 hours of TCM & Tuina in my program. My teacher studied in China for a few years.

She never said anything about it being painful for the client - and the sessions I received were wonderful. It can be very relaxing and energizing at the same time, unlike other massages where I just want to sleep afterwards Tuina often makes me want to jump up and go for a run.

This modality is based in Traditional Chinese Medical theory, and workes with the 10 major sen lines in the body. It's very complex - I still feel incompetent in using it - because determining the course of treatment involves sen lines, organs, acupressure points, the five elements, cycles of excess and deficiency, and yin/yang theory.

I have found it to be extremely effective when done well. It's definitely meant for therapeutic purposes including working with illnesses, but that's not to say it can't be used for relaxation purposes.

I have had Tuina several places in China, it is not a massage for relaxation, it is fantastic for health purposes. I don't feel anyone should give Tuina treatments without having a firm grasp of Traditional Chinese Medicine. True they don't have to be painful but trust me if there are any more then slight imbalances in your system there will pain. Hence the reason Chinese feel that they need to feel pain during a session, they only go for a session when they are feeling out of balance.

Tiny bit off track, but we have a practitioner at our studio who does both Zen Shiatsu and Tui Na. We try to describe them (and the differences) to the layman as simply as possible on our website. She also does an incredible "All Elements" therapy in which she incorporates all of her Oriental Bodywork practices and Reflexology (she is certified - Ingham). Now THAT is an incredible experience; very transforming.

I think my Tui Na sessions with her have been all over the comfort scale. Sometimes its painful, and when she notes my response, she "switches" me (an applied kinesiology technique ?? correct me if I'm wrong). Something seems to really change for me when I get switched, and the Tui Na is much more comfortable (although still vigorous).

I love it! (That's how I was first introduced to cupping too.)

I've not heard of "switching" but hey if it works I'd be all over it *S Do you kow where she learned it?

I would imagine that after a session of Tui Na & Reflexology I would just be a limp noodle, I would love to experience that sometime *S

Tuina has 2 characters. Tui means push, Na means grasp. This means pushing and grasping are two main techniques in this type of massage.
Tuina was called "An Mo" in the ancient time. The booked recorded this therapy was "The Yellow Emperor's Classic" in 2500 BC.
Anmo was taught to Japan in Western Han Dynasty and being called "Ammo".
Anmo was taught to Korean in Western Han Dynasty and being called "Amma".
Anmo then has been called Tuina in Ming Dynasty.
Tuina are classified into 8 techniques: Mo, Jie, Duan, Ti, An, Mo, Tui, Na.
In 1956, China had the first Tuina school in Shanghai which means students learned the tuina techniques from all family styles from all over the country.
Recently, Tuina department is one of 3 departments in Chinese medicine hospitals in China. Each city has 10 to 15 Chinese medicine hospitals. Each province has 3 to 5 Chinese medicine hospitals.
Tuina is widely practiced in Asian countries.
