Yet another fire

On the sea front up by Holiday Inn...again! About 10 shops....same ones that got burnt about 6 months ago. Firemen just leaving the scene now. Just been talking to one of the shop owners. She's distraught because they don't have any insurance and now it's happened twice in 6 months. Mind you, she still has 4 shops in OTOP.

I guess most of these fires are caused by dodgy electrics.

LOL, thought that too but didn't want to say it. Of course another explanation could be in about 2 weeks time the contractor will finish the rebuild of burnt shops down past the Immigration office and has now got his next job lined up :

You're probably right. But OTOH, the standards for wiring there are amazingly unsafe, compared to American standards. If the fire dept. is not all complete amateurs, it should be easy for them to tell how it started. Electrical fires are normally very easy to put out, if someone is there to notice when the fire starts.

Yep same ones as 8 months ago, 6 or 7 of them. The first lot after the Holiday Inn heading north. I could be wrong about insurance though as another of the owners says hers was insured for 5million baht though she doesn't expect to get that....maybe 3million. It's prime beachfront land.....maybe a hotel will appear on it this time ;-)

After seeing how nice beach road was after the tsunami (after the initial clean-up), I kinda wish all those stalls would catch on fire and just go away. Personally I think beach road would be a much nicer walking street. but it would royally frack up traffic of course.

It is really more a dream. Beach road was quite nice after the initial clean-up. The buildings are set quite back quite far. It was easy to imaging lots of little massageplanetes with patios with nice potted plants and trees ect. There were no tuk tuks. No rental cars. They hadn't done the weird beach-side walk way thing yet. It was really nice.

After being there in May/June 07 I thought the beach road and in fact most of Phuket is fantastic.
The shops and markets are great in comparison to Pattaya and Bangkok which I visited 4 weeks ago.
Nice patios, plants etc are great but I personally would not change anything in Patong for a million dollars. I love the place as it is.

I agree with you mate, it was much nicer to walk down beach road months after the Tsunami when it was cleaned up and no where near the amount of small tout shops that are currently there now and were there before.

Yes it does give part of the "Thailand feel" but not exactly great when most of the touts are Paki's and continue to bug the sh1t out of you. I really detest walking down that way out of frustration from being continually pestered by them.

Paki's is a bit derogatory Trent, I think they are mainly Nepalese, so maybe Nepi's would be more accurate.

Agree with ATM here, it did look better without the stalls and it could be made to look so much more upmarket and nicer without them, but never happen, no not never but will be quite a few years yet!!.

Look we all know.. Shift the rental guys and tuktuks off thier patches.. and the whole road would open up.

Its as simple as having the will to do it, that would make this place well (better) managed.

As I just finished a round full of satisfaction I heard alot of Firesquads ad Police passing my Hotel so I looked out and saw a fire from my balcony.

It was a huge fire in Thara Patong I think but after round 3 and 4 it looksloke they got it under control.

Does any body know more , seemed like the fireworks blown up.

Probably just another pole mounted transformer blowing up. (They surely look like fireworks) I just got back and coulnd't believe the state their over head electricity assets were in. As I come from the industry, I notice these things and in the past they have been alright. This trip I was shocked to see the lack of routine maitenance that occured. It would seem that Patong has grown at such a rate that has overwhelmed this utility.
